Andrea Hill. PhD. is an accomplished psychotherapist, actress, singer and acting coach living in
Los Angeles. She has combined her experience into a delightful book of advice and information directed to those who are in or around the creative world of entertainment.
The entertainment world is familiar to Andrea. As a child, she was well known to Cleveland television audiences as Andrea Carroll where she was a regular on the long running “Gene Carroll” Show. Later she played a singer on the daytime serial “Somerset”. In the sixties she signed a recording contract with Epic Records and later Big Top, RCA, and United Artists. She had eight local hits, including “Please Don’t Talk To The Lifeguard” which hit NUMBER ONE on the WHK Fabulous Fifty Tunedex. At only sixteen, with backing vocals by the Chiffons, Andrea hit the Hot 100 in 1963 with “Why Am I So Shy”. During that time of her life, she had the exceptional experience of touring nationally with such stars as Elvis Presley, Stevie Wonder and Bob Hope.
Today, Andrea Hill, Ph.D., MFT., along with husband, former television producer Lyle B Hill, own the nationally renowned acting school Weist-Barron-Hill, located in Burbank, California. Dr. Hill is also a licensed clinical therapist with a specialty working with people in the entertainment industry from beginners to movie stars. She lives in Calabasas, California
I’ve had the good fortune to interview Andrea for a previous “Innocent Age” show. Ironically, on a show dedicated to Lenny Welch, I discovered that Lenny attended a two week “acting in commercials” class taught by Andrea and her husband Lyle.

I am the grandaughter of Gene Carroll, although I only saw him maybe once or twice when I was just a toddler I have always been fascinated with him, his radio shows and talent shows. I would love to be able to see some of his work and maybe even contact Helen Olsen if she is still alive.

Sorry it took over a year to get back with you. As I mentioned before I am Gene Carroll’s grandaughter. He was married to Mary Guay, and they had three children, one of which was my father Eugene Carroll (deceased), Judy (deceased) and Teresa (still alive). I would like to know if he had any other children. According to history he’d been married three times and was hoping I had some other relatives out there.
If you have any pictures or videos of my grandfather I would sure like to see them.

Hello Andrea!
I am just shy of being seventy years old and I am not too savvy on the computer so I do not know if this will ever be read by you. If my memory serves me correctly did you once live on West 49th Street off Memphis Avenue? I seem to remember all the talk about you being on the Gene Carroll Show and I saw you a few times and it was somewhat exciting to have you living in the neighborhood. I remember Gene for his “Uncle Jake’s House” program of which I was a loyal fan. And after Uncle Jake was over Dorothy Fuldheim came on with the news and I always thought “Wow, she is a smart lady!” I send my best wishes to you and your family and it has been nice reminiscing about the “Good Old Days”.
I see that you went to Valley Forge High School. I went to Rhodes High School in Cleveland and after I graduated my dad and mom moved to Moore Drive in Parma off York Road and Valley Forge was just a block north from us.

I have a black and white photo of you that my “best friend” at the time gave me. We were probably in about the fifth grade. She is your cousin, and for the life of me I cannot remember her name. I have pictures and drive by her old house but the name from that many years ago won’t come to me. I wished we had kept in touch. She and her family lived in our little PA town of Shippenville for a short time, before moving to Pompano Beach, FL. I now live on Marco Island in Floride and would like to contact her and see what direction her life took. We listened to “Please don’t talk to the Lifeguard” over and over and I still remember all the words and kept that picture of you all these years. She and I would put on little talent shows at the local Clarion VFW where her parents were members. We always sang your songs.

My wife, Cheryl Puzder now Emery, danced on the Gene Carroll show fo 6 years in the early 60’s (The Three Steps)and mentions you with fondness everytime they play one of your songs. Looking at this web-site has brought back many fond memories. We hear from Terry a few times a year. His hard rock group won an grammy back in the 70’s but then they were all killed in a plane crash. Terry was the only one not on that plane. He spent over 20 years singing in Vegas and now has retired to Montana.

Seeing your name in the class reunion info reminded me of a memory I wanted to share with you.
In the early 60’s my girlfriend and I were walking home from the PH pool when a couple of guys started following us and would not leave us alone. When we spotted your house we ran over and knocked on your door. Your dad invited us in, calmed us down and then walked us the rest of the way home. He was so sweet and we were so grateful.

I was looking through You Tube the other day and found an eight minute special on channel 5’s
50th yr. anniversary and it had a clip of you performing the Doolang on Gene carrols show.
What a great memory and I now know why I had such a big crush on you in the early 60’s(as did most guys in cleveland) Glad you have been so successful. I picked up a cd of your greatest hits
a few months ago(off of Amazon.com I think) lots of memories on that cd.
As a side note I worked with Ray Saporita (spelling?)in the early 70’s at the May Company
downtown. It was interesting talking to him about Gene Carroll and the show.

Attended the 45th VFHS class reunion in Sept. after missing the 30th,35th & 40th. Joann and I were chatting about the “necking parties” at your home and your DAD opening a closet door when I was with someone and saying excuse me! Those certainly were the days of innocence.
Just retired from Time Warner Cable in June and have a bed and breafast in Baltimore, Ohio. We will be moving to Parma Heights in November and am looking forward to those cold, snowy wintery days and nights of Cleveland!

I have about 4 or 5 black and white photos of you performing on stage at about age 15 at Sill School Junior High (or possibly Cuyahoga Falls High School) in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. You invited a boy up onto the stage to sing to and my best buddy Bob Krueger hopped right up there. He is in one of the photos. I was taking photos for the school newspaper at the time.

I and I’m sure a lot of northeastern Ohio people remember and really loved the old Gene Carroll Show. I e-mailed and got a response from Ray Saparita a couple of years ago. He remember said he was living in CA at the time.
I have a good friend from my grade school days, Rita Warner whom I will often call “Reet” because I remember Gene calling Ray’s sister, Rita Saparita, “Reet” on the air.

First off,I did grow up in Cleveland,and eventually moved to LA in 2001.Circumstances forced me to move to Vegas in 2008,but I miss LA,and my goal is to move back sometime in the near future.I do visit several times a year,and also visit Cleveland every year,as so many of my friends still live there.
As far as the Hollywood Show is concerned; its a Collectors show that’s put on 4 times a year at the Burbank Marriott(across from the Airport).They usually have approx: 80 or so Celebrities,including Television,Movies and Recordings.They sign autographs,and sell their pics,or CD’s,depending.People as diverse as Ernest Borgnine,to Joanie Sommers.I try to attend as many as I can,and thought maybe that might be something you’d be interested in.Went in Feb,and,as an example,met another recording artist you may know,Donna Loren,from Shindig/Beach Party Movies,and was the original Dr. Pepper girl-currently lives in Hawaii,and attended her 1st show.
While you don’t know me,had I known you were in my old stomping grounds,knowing me,I might have tried to find a way to get to say hello,because of the Cleve. connection.I’m also past friends with Art Laboe of Original Sound on Sunset,so I got involved with their org. for awhile.

During the time you referred to when you tried out for our bad, I went on the road with 5 musicians and we sang and played for over a year – all over the country and Carribean. Finally, though, I decided to go back to college.

Although we have never met, we do have several connections. First, my mother, Bonnie McLain Avenmarg taught at Pearl Rd. School from 1949 until 1956 (the year I was born) then continued on for another 34 years at two other Parma Schools. Secondly, we both attended Pleasant Valley Jr. High and Valley Forge High School as well as Baldwin-Wallace College. Third, a friend of mine from my days as a fitness center owner also attended jr. high and high school with you. His name is Dick Cooper and he was a football player who also went to B-W, graduating in 1967. Your friend, Ted Castor was one of my teachers at Pleasant Valley, and his father Loren Castor was one of my high school math teachers.
As I am sure you are aware, the Parma Schools have fallen on hard times financially , along with a lot of other school districts. I had the idea to raise money for the Music Dept. at Valley Forge by getting some old friends back together who had a band in the early- to-late 1970’s called “The Fabulous Brylcreams” and were all graduates of Valley Forge from 1971-77. We started off with the idea of doing a reunion concert and the idea has grown to include several other bands, some new, some old, and potentially one band you may be a little familiar with called “The Trolls” also all Valley Forge Graduates from the 1966-67 era.
I’m sure you get requests all the time for help, and we are not asking you for money, but for any contribution or advice. If you happen to be coming back home this summer, the Concert is Saturday, July 24th, 2010 at the Cassidy (formerly Greenbrier) Theater in the Greenbrier Commons in Parma Heights. I know that you sent an audio greeting back in 2000 or 2001 when the Parma Chamber of Commerce did the Local Bands tribute at the Rib’n’Rock at Parmatown Mall. I was there and heard it over the P.A. system. Maybe you could do that for this event as well? Just something talking about the Parma Schools and how important they were to you…

Hi Dr Andrea, I used to watch Gene Carrol Giant Tiger show every Sunday after church in Warren,Ohio in which you appeared quite frequently. The name that always intrigued me from the show was Rita Saparita (sp) from Rocky River, and as fate would have it I lived in Rocky River for 2 years while working for United Airlines in later years. Anyway Im happy for your success and if I was living in your area would take advantage of your school for acting.I attended an acting class when I first moved to Fort Lee, NJ, while still employed by United. Have also taken an introductory 3 week class in Voice Overs at the HB Studios in the West Village in NYC. Anyway it is great to read about you and your successes!

I think I remember you from daytime TV! I recall you used to be married to a producer on “Another World”… something Hill… I think you may also have been on that show too… there was a character in the late 1960s — Muriel Burke — who was Alice Matthews’ roommate and sometimes confidante. I can’t recall if that was you. But I recall you bore a striking resemblance to another actress from that show, Carol Roux, who was also on “Somerset.”

Follow up – you asked for a funny story, although I thought it was anything but funny at the time. I was doing a concert in Atlanta with Stevie Wonder. There was no time to rehearse with the band so I just gave them my charts. Well, I sang “Sixteen, but they played another of my songs! I was only 16 and cried all night!

I just attended a Benedictine High School 45th Reunion (Class of ’65) and our jock conversations turned to the 1962 Charity Game, which lost to St Ignatius. The name Chick Felice (’63 I believe) came up and then of course your name, so I Googled both out of curiosity. Nothing on Chick, but was amazed to find you and happy to see what you’ve done with your life. Thank God not all child stars (if I can call you that) follow the Gary Coleman path. Where did you get your degrees?

Back in the fities, I took dance and singing lessons at Gene’s studio on Euclid. Blanch on the piano for singing and Vince teaching tap. I was part of the tap-square dancing group with you that appeared weekly on The Farm Bureau Jamboree. It was great fun. I miss those chocolate sundaes that you could get at LaMar’s downstairs. Remember those?

I went to North Royalton HS. My friends brother dated Joan Downs(in 1964) and through him I met her sister Jeanne Downs.
They lived on Boundary Lane near VF High School.
We had a couple dates but never hit it off, she had mentioned that she was your locker partner at VF High.
Is that true and do you remember her?
It’s nice to hear you’ve had such a succsessful life.

I understand you went to Maple Heights High School. What years were you there? I was part of a singing group “The Three Heartbreakers” back then. I was a VF grad too. Working in the business with various bands about 40 years coast to coast but now settled down back in Parma a stones throw from your old house. My writing partner and I were working Fla last week and your name came up so I had to do a search and here I am. QUESTION: Do you remember Cheryl Lynn (Biskup)? I think I remember you doing some duets with her. She is a close cousin who I haven’t seen for ages. I know she was touring quit a lot back in the early eighties. Just curious if you remember her. I stumbled across this website today while home from work for the holidays. What a joyful surprize! I remember coming home from church each Sunday & watching the Gene Carroll Show as a young girl. This brings back very special, warm memories of an innocent era so far removed from the screwed up Britany Spears generation that it really makes me feel very nostalgic right now. I went to college at U.C.L.A. so I spent time in Burbank as well, but I am now living back in Twinsburg, Ohio where I grew up. If you ever are in Cleveland during the first weekend in August, be sure to visit Twinsburg for the Twins Days celebration. As Bob Hope would say, “Thanks for the memories,” Anita P.S. I am currently watching an Oldies Performance on TV & for some reason thought of my days in Parma Heights. I went to Pleasant Valley Jr. High School at the same time you were there. I believe we were in a talent show, together, named “As Time Goes By”. I was Father Time (Emcee) for the last four months of the year for the show. I also played trumpet (1st chair) in the Marching Band, Concert Band & Orchestra. I went to the Canteens (Dance held twice a month) in the gym. I was not a good dancer so I played a lot of ping-pong in the girls (upper) gym. But I eventually learned to dance with more confidence. On well, as time goes by a person does reflect on memories. Hope you are doing well. I did not want to pass this opportunity to just say HI, again.

Today I was talking to a facebook friend from Cleveland and reminisced about the Gene Carroll Show. I looked your name up in a search engine. I was blown away to see your beautiful face, which is exactly how I remember the stunning Andrea Carroll who appeared on The Gene Carroll Show weekly in Cleveland! What a success story! Am I surprised? Only that I found you, but not about your success, because you started out successfully and you followed through. Very impressive. When I was a kid, before the Beatles were happening, I would wait to watch the show on Sunday and see you perform. I especially loved your huge hit, “Please Don’t Talk to the Lifeguard”. I used to sing it all the time! I wanted to appear on the show a few years later and sing a Beatle song “If I Fell” and “There’s a Place” with my friend who I harmonized with, but she was too chicken to go on the show, although I begged her, and I was too chicken to go it alone! By the way, do you ever hear about Ray Saporita? He was a heartthrob for me way back when he had his hit song “Hercules”…”OLYMPIA!” lol! I grew up in Cleveland Heights and graduated from Cleveland Heights High. Fast forward to the present. I’m the mother of three grown sons and am now a grandmother as well. I’ve been a comic/impressionist and singer for many years, based in South Florida. Stage name is Sharon Daniels. I have a stage show which I perform in theaters and do corporate work as well. I would love to meet you one day. I remember how excited I was so many years ago in Cleveland to see you in person when you made a public appearance. You were dazzling. I guess you could say I’m still a fan!

The Internet is amazing! I was listening to the 50s on 5 on Sirius Satellite Radio last week when I heard a song that was an old favorite of mine in Kansas growing up. I used to hang out at the radio station in our little town and worked there as a high school student, where I was also the music director. I made it a point to listen to every new release that came in, and one that was a particular favorite was this new song by someone I’d never heard of, Andrea Carroll, “It Hurts to Be Sixteen” (rata-tang-rata-tang-tutang-tutang). Very catchy, so it became a pick hit of the week. I Bing-ed the name “Andrea Carroll” and ended up reading all about Cleveland, a Sunday afternoon TV show, Big Top Records, etc. I heard it again tonight and Bing-ed “Andrea Carroll” again, and this website appeared. I don’t recall it showing up the first time I binged it.
Anyway, I’m babbling on, but I did enjoy your song, and it should have been a huge national hit.

I came to this site when I was looking up: Greenbrier Commons in Parma Hts. Ohio. I knew Andrea back when: I attended grade school in Brooklyn, Ohio and one year Andrea went to school there too: It might have been 8th grade. I was in the younger grades, but everybody watched the Gene Carroll show and everyone knew who she was.
I remember at recess time on the playground, us kids would form a circle around Andrea, and we’d say: “Andrea, sing”. Well, she did!!!

I stumbled over this website, and there you were! I’ve had many good thoughts and memories of you, Liz Richards and the other folks in the basement of the Music and Speech building at Kent State back in 1969-70. I worked across the hall from your office in my job of editing and setting up the instructional videos for WKSU-TV on the Kent campus. You and Liz R. were graduate students at that time. Somewhere in my photos I have shots of you and Liz in that little dumpy office down there. I hope you remember Gary Sleeman and myself…we got you the cake with the “Please Don’t Talk to the Lifeguard” record label in icing on it when you were leaving for NYC and “Summerset”, and I still have the autographed photo you gave me. I retired from a career as a public school teacher, with KSU to thank for all of this!

Hi Bob, I remember you and those days at Kent State very well. Liz and I had a great time producing and hosting that campusTV show while we worked on our Masters Degrees. I haven’t spoken to her in many years bu tI heard that she was in radio in Florida. Do you know what she is doing? After leaving Kent State, I went straight to NewYork and met and married my husband,Lyle.
You have had a great profession and now you can look forward a well deserved retirement.

Andi, (if don’t mind my using the short version of your name from back then). I have no info on Liz R., but I’ll see what I can turn up through some Cleveland contacts at WEWS-TV. If anybody could know, it’d be them. If and when I turn up info, shall I post it here, or do you want to contact me directly through eMail at my address, and dare to share yours with me?
When was the last time you were back this way to see how Cleveland and NE Ohio, for that matter has and has not changed!? The city looks better than ever, though so many of the old and historic buildings are gone now. WEWS is still in the same ” new” studios they built in the late 50s. But, enough of the tourism! Hope you have been or can soon come back to see in person.
Congratulations on your successes in life and career. People are always surprised to learn that I know you, ever so slightly, from ” way back then”. You still look great…wish I could say the same for myself, but then I never could anyhow!

Andrea – a classmate and I were talking about Connie Stevens and Edd Byrnes singing the ‘Kookie’ song, and she admitted she owned the 45 back when. There were so many of these innocent songs back then. I thought she might have had ‘please don’t talk to the lifeguard’, also. She DID! And she wondered whatever happened to you. I’ll send her this link…
The article is nice, but I love the comments (I generally find them the best part of an article). It’s so nice to read the connections being made. So nice for you, and the others! Like your own time machine. I hope it’s because you are a therapist, and actually enjoy connecting with people. That’s a career that can either send you one way or the other. (when my wife gets home – she’s DONE talking to other people! Tho also helpful, to anyone)
I’m ‘younger’ than you are, and was too hip for that old Gene Carroll show! (VF, 1967). But we do have a connection – KeeKee(?) lived on Aylesworth, right behind my parent’s house. And I’ve always wondered – was your song connected to him in any way (being a lifeguard at the PH pool). , or just a coincidence? How much choice did artists actually get on their material, back then? The neighborhood is buzzing less about this now, so come on – confess!
I always assumed it was a happy coincidence.
And how hip was I? My final band, in my 30’s, was playing ‘old time’ music – guitar and fiddle parlor music. Great fun to play, but yes, it was monetarily rewarding as it sounds! (thou we toured for 5 years. It was the best time of my life. No illusions of a career, no pressure to branch out. Music is best kept a hobby! You made the right choice)

Hi Thanks for writing. As you know it was great fun being a musician and it’s nice to connect with people from that era . I didn’t know KeeKee the lifeguard, and I did not choose my own songs, although that really would have been a better story if I had written it for him!! There is a bit of a coincidence though… My grandmother nicknamed me KeeKee (singing bird in Italian) and my whole family called me that. Your wife and I have our profession in common. I still get great satisfaction from it, after all these years.

I recently put some past memories from the 60’s together for the Parma Heights Historical Society. Your name immediatly came to mind. I have listed your name amongst several memorable people from Parma Heights. I attended a Junior Prom at Valley Forge High School in 1963 with a girl friend. I know you were there also. There was a large crowd around you, as I know you were very popular at the time when you were on the Gene Carroll show. I am very happy that you have made a successful career for yourself. I graduated from John Marshall in 1964. I went to school with all of the band members of the Baskerville Hounds. They were a Rock & Roll group, popular about the same time as you. This is for Bob Stillwell. Did you go to school with anyone named (last name) MARSH? Specifically: Cheryl. It seems that she was at John Marshall at the time, too. Do you know anything about the family? I always wondered how the years went for her. WE were from different high schools, but I met her at her job after school.
I also knew Andrea Carroll from elementary school, here in Brooklyn. We use to make her sing, at recess time, out on the playground. We use to make a circle around her, and listen to her sing. I think she was there for only one year. (possibly 8th grade).

Sorry I do not recall the name. She may have graduated in June of 1964. I graduated in Jan. of 1964. Andrea left a lot of good memories in Ohio. What a natural born talent. Gene Carroll was a gifted person for finding natural talent.

Hi Andrea; I read a recent article in the Parma Observer regarding you. Also listened to medley of your recordings back in the early sixties from Chuck Benjamin’s Tunedex Memories. As I am sure along 100’s others had a teen crush on you. Saw you at Chippewa Lake Park and got your autograph. Sadly, it was misplaced/lost over the many years since. Always watched the Gene Carroll show to see you. Dolly Gapa who graduated from my alma mater (Cleveland South High) was a one of the dancers on the show. Also Ms. Albritton (a SHS teacher) played the piano on the show. Cherished memories. Best wishes to you and yours.

I remember singing at Chipewa Lake, way back then. Your message brought back a lot of sweet memories. I’m wondering how you knew Blanche Albritton. Was she your teacher? She was a huge part of my life and I will always miss her. She was my music teacher almost all my young life. And when I married Lyle and moved to New York she came to visit me and we were able to meet some of her family who lived on Long Island.
You didn’t tell me anything about yourself and wonder if you still live in Parma Heights. I’d love to hear about you.

Thank you for your kind response. I went to South High School in Cleveland and Blanche Albritton taught History as I recall at South. I did live in Parma for about 8 years but then moved to Strongsville (30 years as of now). Married for 40 years now, two daughters and 3 granddaughters. Life has presented its challenges but I am blessed

Sorry to deliver some sad news – Frank Artino passed away around Sept. 18th. You can look up his obituary at Cleveland.com – click obituaries and type in his name – there are many condolences – a lot refer to his appearances on Gene’s show. Candy

Hi, Andrea. I just looked you up. You and I had some very fine theatre moments at Baldwin-Wallace. That scene we did from “Picnic” stands out. Some of the realist acting I have ever done in my life. Remember. Then you cast me in your one act directorial project. “Finiculi Finicula”? Was that it. Hope you are doing well. I still remember whispering into your ear onstage. :-). And the kiss that followed.

Hi Maggie, I’m so very sorry to hear about Kitty. She was a very beautiful and talented lady.
One fun thing I remember about the Heartbreakers is that instead of choosing gowns and dresses for their onstage wardrobe, they wore gorgeous negligees. The three girls always looked spectacular and sounded even better!

Dear Andrea, I am so happy to be able to write to you after listening to your music for the past 20 years. You are one of my very favorite girl singers from the early 1960’s. I was introduced to your music when a friend of mine sent me a cassette tape with your song IT HURTS TO BE SIXTEEN. I immediately fell in love with the song and your beautiful singing voice. There was a sweetness and innocence in your songs and your voice that made your music so special. There are still so many people including me who love listening to your songs. It must have been a great thrill for you to have been a very successful teenage recording artist, appearing on television, and meeting so many famous people. Your recordings are very rare and hard to find. I was very lucky to have a friend make me a CD with all your songs on it. MR. MUSIC MAN is one of my favorite songs by you. You gave such an incredible vocal performance on that song and as I am writing this, I can hear the song in my head. Through the internet, your songs can be heard on YOU TUBE. You really brightened up my whole day and made me smile. I am sure you are a very busy person and I want to thank you for taking the time to answer me. I am probably one of your younger fans. I am 59 and I truly love and appreciate the music of the girl singers from the late 50’s and early 60’s. With your beautiful singing voice you should have had hits with all your songs. I am very grateful to have the CD of your music that my friend gave to me, since he knew how much I loved hearing your songs. Hi Andrea, Where do we begin to tell you how many memories you made for countless people growing up in Northeastern Ohio. My sisters and I went to mass at 10 and in front of the TV by noon so we would not miss a second of you. Would be great to have you come back to the area for a speaking engagement and a possible song. You are still that beautiful soul that was our girl in a time that we were blessed to be part of. Very proud of your accomplishments and ongoing talent. Thank you Andrea for allowing me to go back in time as I realize you were not only part of TV but a special lady in our home. Hi Andrea, We were neighbors living a couple of houses apart on Pelham Drive in Parma, Ohio. I often walked past your house going to or returning from school and would occasionally in passing. Unfortunately I never got to meet you, as I was a year ahead of you in school, and later went off to private school and then university. But I did often see you on TV. Hi Andrea! I’m not from the 60s or anything like a lot of people here, I was only born in 2001, but your songs are posted on youtube and I’ve listened to many of them. You really stand out from the other singers of the time, you sound so sweet. I read comments that said you’re a doctor of some sort now and I’m glad that I found this site, I was really curious to see where you were now! I love the songs “Why Am I So Shy”, “It Hurts to be Sixteen”, and “Please Don’t Talk to the Lifeguard”. Im an animator and id love to use your songs to animate one day.
